Complacent, self-made millionaire Scott Northwood wakes up one morning to discover he’s been given the ability to extend the lives of people who are about to die just when they are on the verge of achieving something important.

But there’s a catch—he must shorten his own lifespan by an equivalent amount of time.
Scott plunges into a moral and emotional maelstrom as his desire to live out his own comfortable life collides with a growing sense of obligation to transfer time to others who are clearly more deserving. Complicating matters, he falls deeply in love.

Reviews:

“Richards’s intriguing debut novel explores various weighty questions, such as the definition of a well-lived life.
The plot keeps a sharp pace.  The book poses many morally fraught questions: Isn’t each person’s life worth saving equally? Who can determine the value of a life? Is it wise to really play God?
Bonus points: the Pacific Northwest is painted with a vibrant, saturated palette.”
– Kirkus Reviews

“Every Nicholas Sparks fan, any reader of The Shack or Pay It Forward will absolutely love this book.   Heartening, uplifting and romantic!  If it’s possible for a novel to make you a better person, this might be the one to do it.” – Victoria Skurnick,
Former Editor-in-Chief – The Book of the Month Club

“Richards leaves little doubt of a promising future on best seller lists.  This book takes more than one totally unexpected turn pushing the engaged reader not to put the book down until the end. The plot line insists that the reader stay the course—likely with a huge box of tissues at hand!
The descriptive material makes me want to pack and travel to the Pacific Northwest.  This is an excellent first (or twenty-first) novel. It is one that will stay with me.”

5.0 out of 5 starsA soulful, deeply moving read...

    BySteve G.on January 12, 2015

    Format: Paperback|Verified Purchase

A beautifully poignant and heartfelt tale of a metaphysical "what if?" that we've all felt in those times of wanting to help someone in need, in any way possible. It's pace is equal to the slow and thoughtful walks the main character takes amongst the misty woods and you can feel the author's hand around your shoulders as he guides you from one emotional moment to the next. Human nature is cleverly made a huge character in this novel with all its ugly blemishes on display, but by the end, "If I Could Give You a Day", drags it from its selfish roots and elevates it to a profoundly spiritual place of empathy and sacrifice. And there's a dog, too!

5.0 out of 5 starsThis novel makes you think and examine your own choices in life

    BySeattle Readeron May 20, 2014

    Format: Kindle Edition

If I Could Give You A Day is a story about being given a choice. Do you value someone else's life enough to give up some of your own time in this world? The novel is a fun read with a strong metaphysical theme. It is easy to get into the characters - they are well defined and you follow the emotions and choices they face. The relationships that develop and the way the story unfolds keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. It does evoke emotion and it does make you think about your own life in context of how you would react to this proposition. I could easily see this being turned into a movie - the characters, the setting and the story line would be fun to see on the big screen! And because I live in the Northwest - it was fun to have the story unfolding in a familiar setting.
